It All Started With Riding the Bus and Wearing Mini Skirts!

It all started with riding the bus and wearing those mini skirts!

Growing up, I lived in the country, near a small town, Cherryvale, in southeast Kansas. I spent a lot of time in town, because my grandma lived there. My mom taught fourth grade in the same classroom for many years. Between Church, 4H and school, we knew most people in town.

Yes, I was simultaneously a Happy Hustler 4-Her and a Fighting Cherry. That was our school mascot. (Yes it’s true… Now stop laughing….Ok, Ok..I did used to tell people that it was an all girls school.)

Cherryvale was small, and basically you could walk everywhere. There was no Transit service of any kind.  Because of several things I never learned to drive.

Fast forward a few years. I had married someone and moved to Dodge City and then to Wichita. That marriage was not a good fit. We divorced remaining friends. In fact, he started dating and later married my best friend.( I babysit for her three kids while they dated. I know it’s weird.)

In Wichita, there was a good transit system. I took the bus downtown to work and back. I found a good group of people riding the same route and we had a pretty good time.

Downtown was the lineup.. Where all the buses line up for transfers. This was before two-way radios. Standing in the middle of the street, every morning at rush hour, was this gorgeous hunk of a man. OH STOP MY FLUTTERING HEART!! When all of the passengers had made their transfers, the hunk would waive his newspaper and that was the signal to go.

I was about 22, had good legs and wore a lot of mini skirts. For three days, I crossed the street, smiled at him, and walked on. Finally, he walked me on across the street and asked me out for lunch. SIGH. 7 months later, we were married. Now we’ve been married for 42 years. I have followed him as he’s become a manager of the Topeka Transit System, the Toledo system and the Fort Worth system. Now he’s retired. He’s still the great love of my life. And I still ride those buses occasionally but alas, my legs have gone to pot!

It all started with riding the bus and wearing those mini skirts!

How did you meet your love? Are you a Transit Rider? What attracted you to your significant other?

Hello Friends….Here I am!

I’m sitting here, in my house, writing my first blog….

I am sitting here, in my house, writing my first blog.  I’m so glad you are here and hope you will stick around!   My husband, Dick, has travelled to Denver for a few days.  He’s attending a conference, and they are working a ski trip in for some of the attendees.  Sounds like hard work, huh?  But it’s a nice change of pace from our last few weeks in Ft. Worth, where it’s been raining most days.

I’m at that stage in life where I’ve retired from teaching and am concentrating on getting my house organized and my body in shape.  Does anyone else out there have trouble being organized in your house or life?  It’s getting better around here.  I’ll have some photos up soon of some of my projects.

Grandparenting is my big love!   We feel so blessed to have three wonderful grandchildren.  I am “Grandma” and my hubby is “Boppa”.  Our oldest two grandchildren live about four hours from us.  We get to see them occasionally.  The energy level certainly goes up when they are here!  I’m hoping to share some of our craft projects and activities with you. Our youngest grandchild lives about 15 minutes from us.  We keep him on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  He is 18 months old and on the go!

Today, we picked out a new dog from the Humane Society.  Bill is a black lab and so far, seems to be a great dog.  We had debated for a long time about what kind of dog we wanted.  We knew we wanted a big dog.  Dick wanted a yellow lab.  I wanted a black lab, but a girl…didn’t want pee all over the house.  Well…we adopted a black, male lab.  He’s about 2 years old and seems to be house trained.  We are going to share him with my daughter and hubby.  When we’re gone, they’ll keep him.  Primarily , he will be here.

Life is very good for us.  How is your life?  What stage of life are you in?  Let me know about you, in your comments.

Grandma Sherry

Hello World!

It’s the first day of my new blog. I hope you will join me on my new Journey. Please Subscribe and give me some feedback. Glad you’re here! Take a load off of your feet and sit back and read on. Enjoy yourself. I hope to write new posts at least twice a week.

I’m Sherry Ruddell, also known as Grandma to my three grandchildren. Only retiring a couple of years ago I have taught in several daycares, taught at the Topeka Venture Center,. Music to grades K through 8 at a Catholic school, and after moving to Fort Worth, I subbed at one Elementary School for 13 years.

Also, I have taught piano lessons for 49 years. (Yes, I started when I was 6 months old! 😃😃)

I love children and seeing the “light bulb” suddenly click for them. I’m kind of a silly teacher. Gotta have fun! I’ve been known to dress up in costumes, wear wigs, have no buttons and a button that when pushed, says “that was easy!” My teacher box includes a voice changer, a rubber chicken, and joke books.

Learning should be Fun and Creative!<

Tell me about you. Do you have any hobbies? Kids? Grandkids? What made you laugh today?
